Situated 2km from the centre of
town, the school lies on the outskirts of Plettenberg Bay,
nestled in natural vegetation within the Ladywood Estate.
The school places emphasis on educating the whole child, encouraging
self discipline, self confidence, independence and recognizing
the individuality of each child.
The primary goal of Greenwood Independent School is to help
each child reach full potential in all areas of life. Activities
promote the development of social skills, emotional and spiritual
growth, physical co-ordination as well as cognitive preparation.
The holistic curriculum, under the direction of specially
trained teachers, allows the child to experience the joy of
learning, time to enjoy the process, ensure the development
of self-esteem, and provides the experiences for confidence
from which children create their knowledge and strength which
prepares them for the future.
Greenwood Primary has made a promise to the children, a promise
to ensure that their true potential will be fulfilled, and
thus give them confidence on the road ahead.
A Brief History of the School
The Greenwood School was founded in 1997. The school was
initially privately owned and managed by a parent committee.
The school opened with one pre-school class of five children
and began operating from the Community Development Centre
in Plettenberg Bay under the name of The Plettenberg Bay Montessori
School.
As numbers grew it became necessary to find bigger premises
and in 1998 the school found a large barn in Ladywood from
which to operate. The school was then handed over to the new
Greenwood Trust with 11 parents as founding members. The Preschool
class had grown to twenty children and the first class opened
in January 1998 with seven children. In December 1999 the
Trust sold the pre-school business.
In January 2000 the school opened under the new name of Masifunde
Montessori Preschool. The school was privately owned and managed
for the following 5 years. Numbers grew. In 2002 a toddler
class was opened and in 2003 a second pre-school class was
started. By December 2005 the demand for a new Primary school
motivated The Greenwood Company to be formed (an association
incorporated under section 21) with 7 founder members.
In January 2006 the school opened under the name of Greenwood
Primary Independent School. The school is managed by a Principal
and the Board of Directors. Today the school boasts Preschool
facilities for 44 children aged 2-6yrs and Primary school
facilities for 72 children. |
